What is the minimum age to apply for a driving permit in Indiana?

In Indiana, you may apply for your learner’s permit starting at age 15 if you are enrolled in a driver’s education course. Otherwise you must wait until you are 16 to apply.

What documents will I need to submit when applying for a driver's license in Indiana?

Is driver’s education required in order to get an Indiana learner’s permit?

Yes.

  • If you are 15 and a half you will need to enrol in driver’s education before applying for a permit.

How do I pass the Indiana permit test?

To pass your Connecticut permit test, you are expected to know Indiana traffic laws, road signs, and rules for safe driving. All material will be taken from the Indiana Driver’s License manual, which is what our FREE DMV practice test questions are based on. Subjects will cover sharing the road, meaning of road signs, navigating Intersections, speeding consequences, drinking and driving laws.

There are 50 questions on the permit test. You need to get at least 80% in order to pass. Remember, You are NOT allowed to use the driver’s handbook during your permit test. You are being tested on your ability to recall the rules of the road. Prepare yourself before you go in and you will see that you can do well without the manual.

I failed my Indiana permit test, what should I do?

If you failed your written test, you won’t be given a permit. You must wait at least until the next business day before you can retake it. If you fail 3 or more times, you will have to wait at least 60 days and begin the process all over again.

I passed my Indiana permit test! Now what?

Congratulations!

You must get at least 50 hours of driving training with a licensed instructor or with a licensed driver 25 or older. At least 10 of those 50 hours must be at night. You must log your hours in a Log of Supervised Driving. On the day you go to take your road test, you will be required to show the log to the examiner.

When can I take my road test?

After getting your learner’s permit, you must get at least 50 hours of behind the wheel training with a licensed instructor or a licensed driver 25 or older. A minimum of 10 of those 50 hours must be done at night. You will have to log your practice time in a Log of Supervised Driving. On the day you go to the BMV for your road test, you are required to show your log to the examiner.

Who may I have in the car with me while driving in Indiana with a learner's permit?

You are not supposed to drive with other passengers in the car other than a certified licensed instructor or a licensed driver aged 25 or older.

New to Indiana

Will I have to pass a road test when I move to Indiana from another state?

No road test is required, but you have 60 days to get your Indiana driver’s license after becoming a resident. All you have to do is exchange your old license for a new Indiana license.

Is my out-of-state learners permit valid in Indiana?

No. You cannot drive in Indiana with an out-of-state learner’s permit.
