How do I pass the Utah permit test?

To pass your Utah permit test, you are expected to know Utah traffic laws, road signs, and rules for safe driving. All material will be taken from the Utah Driver’s License manual, which is what our FREE DMV practice test questions are based on. Subjects will cover sharing the road, meaning of road signs, navigating Intersections, speeding consequences, drinking and driving laws.

There are 50 multiple choice questions on the permit test. You need to get at least 80% in order to pass. Remember, You are NOT allowed to use the driver’s handbook during your permit test. You are being tested on your ability to recall the rules of the road. Prepare yourself before you go in and you will see that you can do well without the manual.

If you failed your written test, you won’t be given a permit.You may take it again the same day. You may take two tests in the same day.

I passed my Utah permit test! Now what?

Congratulations!

If you are 19 years old or older, you must hold your learner’s permit for at least 90 days. If you do not want to wait that long, you may go ahead to complete your driver’s education course in order to get your license.

If you are under 17 years old, you must hold your permit for 6 months and complete driver’s education. If you turn 18 while holding the permit, you may go ahead and apply for your license without driver’s education.

Applicants must also complete 40 hours of supervised practice driving.

When can I take my road test?

After getting your learner’s permit, you must wait at least 90 days to get your permit if you are 19 or older, unless you complete driver’s education. If you are 18, you must wait 90 days before you can take your road test. If you are 17 or younger, you must wait 6 months and complete driver’s education, unless you turn 18 while holding a permit, then you do not need to complete driver’s education.

During this time period, teens under 17 or under must complete driver’s education. Applicants must also complete 40 hours of supervised practice driving.

Who may I have in the car with me while driving in Utah with a learner's permit?

You must be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old when driving with a permit.

New to Utah

Will I have to pass a road test when I move to Utah from another state?

You may be required to pass a written test and driving test. However, that is up to the discretion of the examiner.

Is my out-of-state learners permit valid in Utah?

Yes, you may drive with you out-of-state learner’s permit in Utah if you’re at least 16. You must adhere to the rules of both your home state and Utah.
