COVID-19 and the DMV

The novel coronavirus (aka COVD-19) has spread through all continents except Antarctica and to all states.

There are widespread school closures and large gathering cancellations and most states have closed some or all of the DMV offices. Most states have started to reopen their DMV offices but most will require appointments. The following list will show all the states with any restrictions or closures due to coronavirus cases.

Alabama

Driver License Office: 

Certain ALEA Driver License offices remain closed to public access. To view a list of open offices and those with limited services available via phone, click the link below. As always, ALEA is dedicated to serving the citizens of this state, but we must make the health and safety of our customers and our personnel a priority. To combat the spread of COVID-19, we encourage everyone to use personal protection equipment and other safeguards during in-person Driver License transactions.

Alaska

Driver License Office:

Appointments are required for an in-person DMV visit

The DMV’s operations have been augmented to comply with COVID-19 social distancing recommendations and you must have an appointment to visit us in person. Most DMV transactions, including driver’s license renewals/duplicates and vehicle registration renewals/duplicates, can be done online!

DMV is offering pandemic-safe motorcycle and non-commercial road tests in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Soldotna and Palmer.

Arizona

Driver License Office: MVD is restricting in-person services at offices state wide. Call 602-712-2700 if your service cannot be completed online and a MVD representative will schedule an office appointment if necessary.

Driver License renewal requirements are extended six months from the expiration date for all Arizona driver licenses and driving permits that expire between March 1, 2020 and September 1, 2020.

Arkansas

California

    Colorado

    Driver License Office:

    As of Monday, May 11, we have reopened all offices except Trinidad (which will open when their county is no longer under a stay-at-home order).

    Some offices will be limiting the number of customers that are allowed in the DMV offices.

    Connecticut

    Driver License Office:

    DMV services are being offered by appointment only. Services vary by office. Check individual offices below for services at that location.

    District of Columbia

    DC DMV remains operational with most necessary services provided online. Under Phase Two of the District’s re-opening plan, the following service changes begin June 23, 2020:

    • All service centers, adjudication services, and the Brentwood Commercial Driver License (CDL) Office will operate on an “appointment only” basis.
    • The Inspection Station will operate on a first come, first serve basis with modified hours.
    • The Self-Service Vehicle Emissions Inspection Kiosk will re-open with 24/7 access.

    Road Skills Tests will resume on June 30, 2020.

    Delaware

    Driver License Office: Due to current health concerns, DMV is now operating at up to 60% building capacity until further notice. Wednesday hours will be 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. for the foreseeable future (there are no evening hours.) For up-to-date information on DMV, visit: https://de.gov/1Su

    Georgia

      Hawaii

      Driver License Office: All driver licensing centers are open and will require an appointment.

      Idaho

      Driver License Office: Normal Operating Hours. Effective immediately, the Idaho Transportation Department has extended all Driver’s Licenses, Driver’s Training Permits, Instruction Permits, Commercial Learner’s Permits, Identification Cards, and Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL) without hazmat endorsements that are expired or will expire between March 1, 2020 and May 31, 2020, to be valid until June 30, 2020. CDL holders will still need to comply with medical certificate requirements to be considered valid.

      Illinois

      Driver License Office: Driver Service Facilities Open.

      • All driver’s licenses, ID cards, vehicle registration, restricted driving permits and monitoring device driving permits that are currently expired or set to expire by Sept. 30 have been extended until Nov. 1, 2020.
      • All employees are wearing face masks and customers are required to do the same. Plexiglass dividers have been installed at all work stations and tape has been applied to the floor in 6-foot intervals to follow social distancing guidelines, limiting the number of customers inside a facility at one time.

      Indiana

      Driver License Office:

      Beginning the week of June 15, all BMV branches will be open to serve customers by walk-in and appointment. Please make sure to check branch hours as all branches have returned to normal operating hours and many are closed on Mondays.

      Driving skills exams are not available from the BMV at this time. We will re-evaluate availability of these exams in early July.

      Iowa

      Driver License Office:

      Vehicle registrations, license plates, and title services need to made through your county treasurer’s office. Please contact the office in your county to determine how to receive services at this time. Find out more information regarding vehicle services.

      Driver’s license and ID services customers may have a variety of options to receive services. Use our service selector to find out your options. Please note that if you must come into an Iowa DOT-operated service center you will need to make an appointment. Walk-in customers will not be served.

      Massachusetts have entered Phase 2 of reopening. Certain DMV offices are open and may require an appointment.

      Minnesota

      Open deputy registrar and driver’s license agent offices and DVS exam stations are listed below. Services and hours vary by location. If services are not listed for the office you would like to visit, please call the office to find out what services they are offering.

      DPS-DVS reopened some exam stations May 19 to offer limited services. Locations and services are listed below.

      • Knowledge tests are only available at DVS exam stations.
      • DVS exam stations will not accept driver’s license renewal or duplicate applications unless an exam is required. Visit your local deputy registrar or driver’s license agent office for that service.

      You are required to wear a face mask and complete a wellness screening to enter a DVS exam station.

      Mississippi

      Driver License Office: 

      Beginning Monday, June 8, 2020, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety will provide limited services at all permanent driver license stations in adherence to recommended social distancing guidelines. Customers are strongly encouraged to wear masks inside the driver license stations. The following services will be available at permanent driver license stations:

        New York

        You can make reservations for limited in-person transactions at state-run DMV offices in regions that are in at least Phase 3 of reopening. Reservations will be required and will only be offered for a limited number of critical services that cannot be done online or by mail or dropbox.

        North Carolina

        Driver License Office:

        ​​​​​​For the health and safety of our customers and employees during the COVID-19 pandemic, some N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles driver license offices will be closed starting Wednesday, March 18.

        The open offices will be transitioned to handle appointment-only visits and will limit the number of customers allowed inside at the same time, depending on the office size.

        North Dakota

        Driver License Office: 

        The NDDOT Restart Plan is underway. We are starting a phased approach by providing prioritized on-site services which are available by APPOINTMENT ONLY.         Driver License Office:

        THE OKLAHOMA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY WILL OPEN OFFICES FOR DRIVER LICENSE AND/OR OKLAHOMA IDENTIFICATION CARD PROCESSING. SOCIAL DISTANCING GUIDELINES WILL BE ENFORCED AND THE NUMBER OF CUSTOMERS IN THE BUILDING WILL BE LIMITED.
